The Nifty settled at 23,995.95 as the Sensex snapped a five-session losing streak on Monday.
The Sensex closed 776.29 points higher, a gain of 1.02 per cent, at 76,835.78. The Nifty rose 229.40 points, or 0.96 per cent.
The turnaround came as crude oil prices fell sharply after the United States and Iran paused military strikes, easing fears of a prolonged conflict.
IT and bank stocks led the advance, with Eternal and IndiGo among the top gainers.
The gains built on a positive opening earlier in the session.
This marks a reversal after five straight sessions of losses driven by an earlier oil price spike.
