The India Meteorological Department has warned of flooding as a red alert covers parts of eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Maharashtra for extremely heavy rain.
Isolated spots could record rainfall above 204.5mm, with the broader region expected to see 115.6mm to 204.4mm.
The alert warns of flash floods, overflowing rivers and localized infrastructure damage in the affected areas.
A well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining Madhya Pradesh, along with an upper-air cyclonic circulation, is driving the rain.
Another cyclonic circulation remains active over the northwest Bay of Bengal, while a western disturbance continues to influence weather in Jammu and Kashmir.
Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are forecast across several states, with safety advisories issued for residents, farmers and travellers.
