Shubman Gill has topped the ICC’s ODI batting rankings, ending New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell’s stint at No. 1.
Gill’s climb was fuelled by his showing in India’s recent ODI series against England, where he scored an unbeaten 80 in the first match and 77 in the third ODI at Lord’s.
Mitchell has fallen to second place after a modest run of scores, including 65 in an opening ODI against West Indies followed by two scores of 28.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain third and fourth in the latest rankings update.
Separately, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi jumped 230 spots in the T20I batting rankings to sit at 48th, up from 278th ahead of a series against Zimbabwe.
The surge followed his tally of 151 runs across a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, which included two half-centuries.
Gill’s rise to the top of the ODI rankings comes as he continues to lead India’s white-ball side, having taken over as ODI captain in October 2025 in place of Rohit Sharma ahead of the Australia tour.
The updated rankings follow India’s recent tour of England, where several batters delivered strong performances during the white-ball leg.
England won the three-match series 2-1 despite India’s opening victory in Birmingham, following it up with wins at Cardiff and Lord’s. Joe Root ended up as the Player of the Series with 249 runs across the three ODIs.
Gill’s form with the bat has been a rare bright spot for India during a series defeat, reinforcing his growing reputation as a batter capable of anchoring the innings under pressure in a chase or a defence.
Gill has held the India ODI captaincy since October 2025, when he replaced Rohit Sharma for the tour of Australia, and has since led the side through series against New Zealand and Australia.
ICC batting rankings are updated regularly based on recent performances, with points weighted more heavily toward matches played against stronger opposition and in bigger series.
